When Horsing Around Is
Good
Saddle
up for the 2008 Tradewinds Horse Camp, for ages 9 through 16,
from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays starting on Monday, June 9, and
ending on Friday, August 15.
Each
five-day session includes daily riding instruction, weather
permitting, except on Fridays. Instruction also includes: breeds and
colors; anatomy of the horse; appropriate riding equipment, tack,
and general care of the horse in the show ring and on the trails;
nutrition and feeding; and routine, preventive, and therapeutic
maintenance. Other activities include videos, indoor/outdoor games,
and farm activities.
Registration
is offered Saturdays and Sundays only, beginning on May 10, at the
stables on the north side of Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek. Class
size is limited and early registration is recommended. Fees must be
paid and a release and waiver of liability signed at registration.
The fee is $300 per session. Children must provide their own lunches
and refreshments. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required.
Participants should also bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a
towel.

A Triathlon – But in
Reverse The
typical race combination of swimming, bicycling, and running gets
inverted for the Reverse Triathlon, which gets under way at 7
a.m. on Sunday, May 18 at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek. The
event starts with a three-mile run, followed by a 13.5-mile cycling
race, and concludes with a 300-yard swim.
Proficiency
in these three competitions isn’t the only qualifier – athletes must
also know how to race each stage to preserve energy and endurance
for the subsequent stage. All U.S.A. triathlon rules will be in
effect, and the field is limited to 200 athletes.

When Your Pet’s in
Need
Your
animal companion(s) may not be very good at letting you know when
and where it hurts, so it’s up to you to keep an eye out for them.
Learn what to look for and how to deal with it at an Introduction
to Pet First Aid, offered from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May
13, at the Skate Park at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield
Beach.
The
class is offered as a community service by the Parks and Recreation
Division and the nonprofit group Sun States Animal Blood Bank. It
covers basic first aid and includes hands-on skills training. Topics
covered include Scene Safety (safety, restraints, and head-to-toe
exams); Injury Emergencies (bleeding, bandages, moving the animal
safely, splinting, and punctures); Environmental and Heat Stress
Emergencies (ticks, toads, and temperature); and Animal CPR
(optional, time permitting). The class will be offered again on
Thursday, June 12 at Sunview Park in Fort Lauderdale.

Let’s Get
Sociable
The
Parks and Recreation Division’s Special Populations Section will
host a free Teen Social, for middle and high school students,
ages 13 to 21, with developmental disabilities. The event takes
place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at the Anne Kolb Nature
Center at West Lake Park in Hollywood, in the nature center’s
Mangrove Hall. Activities will include music, dancing, and
refreshments.

Dive in for Movie
Magic You’ve
heard of drive-in movies – why not Dive-In Movies? The pool
at Safari Isle at Markham Park in Sunrise will host splashy
cinematic fun for all ages starting on Saturday, May 24, from 7 to
10 p.m. The cost is only $5 per person, well under what you’d expect
to pay at your local multiplex. And just like at a real theater, a
variety of concession items will be available for purchase. No
flotation devices are allowed, however.
Additional
play dates in the series will be on Saturdays, June 21, July 26,
August 23, and September 20. Call the park to find out what movie is
scheduled for a given date. Safari Isle also opens for the season,
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends, on
Monday, May 26 and Saturday, May 31, respectively. Summer hours are
in effect through Labor Day.

A Summer Camp for
4-H Summer’s
almost here, so it’s not too soon to figure out what to do with the
kids in your household. Research has shown that camping helps kids
build life skills in a safe environment while having fun, and 4-H
Summer Overnight Camp 2008 offers just that. Activities include
hands-on science and nature projects and activities; healthy
lifestyles, archery, canoeing, and arts and crafts; and fishing,
campfires, team sports, and swimming.
The
camp runs the week of Monday, June 23 through Friday, June 27 at 4-H Camp
Cloverleaf in Lake Placid, Florida. Fees are $200 for campers
ages 8 to 12, $110 for counselors in training ages 13 and 14 and
counselors ages 15 to 18. Cost includes round-trip transportation,
meals and snacks, and a T-shirt. Discounts are available for youths
who are eligible for school lunches and for families enrolling more
than one camper. Camp staff are trained, monitored, and evaluated by
the University of Florida/IFAS – 4-H. And don’t worry about too much
“roughing it” – cabins, the cafeteria, and activity rooms are all
air-conditioned for campers’ comfort.

Think Greenery Looking
for some plants to spruce up your home landscape? Look no further
than the Broward County Plant Affair. The popular annual
event takes place the weekend of May 3 and 4 at Plantation Heritage
Park, where you’ll find a plant show and sale with up to 30 vendors.

In the Swim Four
Broward County Parks and Recreation Division facilities – C.B.
Smith, Central Broward Regional, Markham, and T.Y. – are offering
Learn To Swim Programs. All of the swimming classes will meet
for a total of eight lessons, Mondays through Thursdays. Classes are
30 minutes long. Rained-out classes will be made up on Fridays, and
each two-week session is limited to two make-up lessons only. Six
different courses are offered, designed for ages 2 and up, from
preschool through adult. Schedules and courses available will vary
depending on the park. Four sessions start on June 9 and end on
August 7. Preregistration is encouraged and is currently under
way.
