DEERFIELD ISLAND PARK /

ISLAND BOAT SHUTTLE SERVICE

Saturdays and Sundays, Hourly from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For all ages. Free.

Individuals and families wishing to visit the island can catch the shuttle from Sullivan Park (on Riverview Road at the Intracoastal Bridge). The last return shuttle departs the island at 4 p.m. Visitors can walk the park's two trails (trail guide maps are available at the gazebo next to the marina) and enjoy the park's picnic grills and tables. Soda machines are also available. For more information, call the park at 954-360-1320.

The activities listed below offer highlights of what’s going on this month at a park near you. Most activities require fees; some also require preregistration. Call or visit the individual park office as indicated for further information.

Broward County Parks and Recreation Division

LONG KEY NATURAL AREA AND NATURE CENTER / NATURE CRAFTS FOR KIDS

Saturday, November 1, 2 to 4 p.m.

Ages 6 to 12. Fee: $6/person.

Children are invited to get creative with natural materials. Learn about the history and ecology of Long Key and create a take-home memory. Preregistration is required by October 31. This event will also be held on Saturday, December 6 at the same time. Preregistration is required by December 5. For more information, call the nature center at 954-327-8797.

SECRET WOODS NATURE CENTER /

GUIDED NATURE WALKS

Saturdays, November 2 and 30, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

For all ages. Fee: $3/person.

Enjoy a guided nature walk along the New River Trail and learn about the local flora and fauna. This program will also be offered on Saturdays, December 14 and 27. For further information, call the nature center at 954-791-1030.

EXTENSION EDUCATION SECTION /

BROWARD COUNTY FARM BUREAU DAY

Saturday, November 8, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For all ages. Free.

Activities include food recipe competitions, youth speech contests, conservation tips, entertainment, Broward County 4-H, 4-H Junior Master Gardeners, and the multi-faceted booths with Florida Master Gardeners of Broward County. Landscaping information, including advice on native plants, controlling diseases, household and garden pests, and conservation of water, soil, and vegetation resources will also be available., in addition to educational materials for butterfly gardening, Florida-friendly landscaping, wildlife gardening, orchid care, and maintenance of tropical fruit. ANNE KOLB NATURE CENTER /

GIVE THANKS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT DAY

Saturday, November 15, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For all ages. Fees vary with activity.

The event will be held in the park’s Mangrove Hall, Exhibit Hall, and courtyard. Varied activities are planned, including environmental information tables, displays, speakers, arts and crafts, and a global climate change forum at 2:30 p.m.

 

The nature center’s Exhibit Hall will also be open throughout the event (admission $1 per person). Other activities may be fee-based. Call the nature center for further information.

FERN FOREST NATURE CENTER / TEQUESTA INDIANS: SLIDE SHOW AND NATURE WALK

Sunday, November 16, 1 p.m.

For all ages. Fee: $3/person.

A slide show highlights the history of the Tequesta Indians in Broward County and is followed by a guided nature walk. For more information, call the nature center at 954-970-0150.
