Upcoming Special Events
Synergy Dragon Boat Racing
November 22, 2008

The Synergy Dragon Boat Racing Series stops by Quiet Waters Park on Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21, 2008, at 9:30 a.m. Teams of 11 paddle colorful boats that are more than 30 feet long and resemble stylized Chinese dragons. Paddlers are led by a drummer who helps them stay on the beat and motivates them, as their muscles ache and the water flies.

Dragon boating is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. The last full regatta in Broward County was three years ago. Will Murphy, president of Synergy Outdoor Adventure Resources (SOAR) and an avid dragon-boat paddler himself, decided that was too long ago, so SOAR is directing a series of four regattas. Each regatta will be finished in one day if possible, with any remaining races being completed on Sunday.
This is a fundraising event for the Fort Lauderdale Children's Theater. If you are interested in registering a team for the next race you can contact Will Murphy at 305-972-6461 or willmurphy@soarteam.com.

Park History
A little history...Using funds from the 1978 bond issue, Broward County acquired this 431.4-acre property in the early '80s from Houdaille Inc., a major dredge-and-fill contractor that used the site essentially as a "borrow pit." The proposed name of Lakeview Park was abandoned in favor of Quiet Waters by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. The park officially opened to the public in March 1983. A substantial upgrade was developed and in 1984, Splash Adventure, an interactive children's water playground, was opened in the southeast corner of the park.
